Toby Chapman reports back to the RSrnYC Trust:
"I left the UK on 07 April 2015 to take park in Antigua Race Week. I arrived in Antigua 10 days before the event was due to start with the hope of finding some day work to help with finances. On my second day in Antigua I was asked by my company Stormforce to deliver the yacht, Palpatine to St Barths. I left with a change of clothes fully expecting to be returning to Antigua in a couple of days. However on arrival in St Barths some of the clients failed to arrive and I Was asked to stay on as 'Mate' to help crew the boat for that regatta. This was Palpatine's first Caribbean season where in St BArths our customers were Brazilians who spoke limited Englist. As I have absolutely no Portuguese this led to an interesting week of charades! A combination of novice crew with limited shared language, a highly competitive charter fleet and the boat's rating all led to a disappointing overall result.
I then took the boat back to Antigua and competed in the race week there. In Antigua we has Palpatine's owner on board long with clients from the IT industry. We had a slightly better week of results coming in 8th overall.
At the end of Antigua week I had initially thought I would have the opportunity to sail the boat back across the Atlantic. This was not possible as the race we were to take part in was cancelled. However I was asked to sail the boat to the American Virgin Island for shipping home. This required travel through the British Virgin Islands first which gave me an opportunity to experience a number of different Caribbean Islands and of longer trips.
I finally flew back to the UK on 2nd of May.
I am extremely grateful to the RSrnYC Trust for their kind assistance to enable me to take up this fantastic opportunity. Prior to my trip I was planning to try to move to the Caribbean to work on charter boats. However my experiences during that month gave me time to reflect on my future aspirations and I am now keen to investigate work or apprentice opportunities in sail making as I have developed a keen interest in the new technologies in this industry."
